Newton South High School Reviews

Newton South is a big, mostly white, academically rigorous high school in a very type-A suburb of Boston. Courses are very hard at the curriculum 1 level ('normal') and honors or AP courses are brutal. Teachers don't like to give A's and kids really feel the pressure to do well.

The courses at Newton South are highly advanced. This schools Cir. 1 courses are more challenging than most schools Honors courses. The amount of work/homework given may be more than almost any other public school in the country. Teachers are hesitant about giving A's to top students. The school is great academically, above-average activities/clubs, and has many sports teams though very weak athletically. The major complaint about this school is that many students, despite maximum effort, have average GPA's despite the fact that those students will score 1400+ on SAT's. Colleges fail to recognize that students at NSHS with GPA's of 3.0 may be more qualified that students with a 3.8 from many schools which hurts its students. You will find many students come back to South explaining that High Sschool was much harder than college (even Ivy League Schools) and more challenging. Teachers need to lessen the strict grading.

NSHS is a highly competitive, college oriented high school. The students are serious about doing well in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. The school has just undergone major renovations, it has grown quite a bit over the last few years.

As a former student, (class of '01) I have to disagree with the previous entry in that I forged strong relationships with several of my teachers, particularly those in the foreign language and history departments, as well as my guidance counselor while I attended South. I also want to add that the quality and variety of extracurriculars and study abroad opportunities is superb. In fact, many of the programs I participated in are unheard of in public schools in California (where I am now enrolled in college).

Newton South is one of the premier high schools in the nation. Academic support services are readily available, the atmostphere is very positive and broadminded, and the building itself has gone under a complete renovation. While not exempt from criticism, this is a fine school.

The academic program at this school exceeds most in the nation. The honors courses are often at college level. Unfortunately, the school's large and growing population makes for very limited student teacher relationships. Good luck finding your way around, and from personal experience, don't take more than four honors classes at a time.
