Food Trucks in Boston: Meals on Wheels Hitting Boston

An army of fast-food trucks in boston are either roaming the city or are slotted to hit the streets in the coming months thanks to an ordinance passed in April expanding access to the mobile restaurants beyond downtown and into the city’s neighborhoods. Food trucks in Boston will provide moveable feasts.

In fact, Mayor Thomas Menino launched a so-called “Food Truck Challenge” last summer, inviting local businesses to present their menus and concepts for a chance to receive permits to operate on City Hall Plaza. The trio of winners—Bon Me, Clover and Momogoose—recently set up shop in the highly trafficked plaza outside of Government Center

In early spring, the city allowed a crew of four trucks to orchestrate a test run in Downtown Crossing in the parking lot on Washington Street and Avenue de Layfayette. For the day-long stint, the food trucks included the Cupcakory, Grilled Cheese Nation, Lincoln Street Coffee and Will Gilson’s Eat restaurant. In the coming months, similar food truck festivals are scheduled to hit Downtown Crossing on Sundays and continue at various locales throughout Boston including the South End, Fort Point Channel and outside of the Museum of Science.

“This is just the beginning of a process to foster an active food truck culture in Boston, to give opportunities to small businesses, enliven public spaces and promote access to fun, interesting, fresh food across the city,” Menino explains in a press release.

Meanwhile, the three food trucks in City Hall Plaza have become a viable lunch alternative for the hungry masses near Government Center. Here’s a round up of the trio of mobile food vendors located across the street from Faneuil Hall Marketplace:

Bon Me—Vietnamese-inspired street food sandwiches served on a French baguette and coupled with rice bowls and noodle salads.

Clover--The white food truck is an always-changing experiment, offering core items like its breakfast granola with locally grown fruit and its lunch sandwiches which include a chickpea fritter and a BBQ Settain.

Momogoose—Specializing in vegan and non-vegan food inspired by Southeast Asian flavors, Momogoose uses science-based cooking to minimize calories while maintaining taste.
