Clover Food Lab: MIT food truck rolls into Boston

Jul 8, 2010

Looking for a healthy meal on wheels? The a la cart offerings of Clover Food Lab, a popular food truck that has served up organic, just-cut breakfast and lunch food for the masses outside of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 20 Carlton St. near the Kendall T stop in Cambridge since 2008 has recently set up shop on Dewey Square Park, the regentrified section of the Greenway between Summer and Congress streets in Boston’s Financial District.

Their tagline? Everything will be different tomorrow. Yep, the Clover Food Lab is a notch above the typical food cart offerings in nearby Downtown Crossing.

Since opening in June, the second location of the Clover Food Lab has been a hit among the wary business suit wearing sect and curious tourists looking for an affordable, healthy alternative to the pricier, brick-and-mortar lunch options scattered throughout Boston’s financial nerve center. The white food truck is an always-changing experiment, offering core items like its breakfast granola with locally grown fruit that rotates depending on the season and its lunch sandwiches which include a chickpea concoction and its always popular BBQ Settain.

The crew has fun with the vegetarian and vegan food they serve, trying new things with their “4 p.m. special” that includes fried pickles with mustard emulsion for a mere $3 and rumor is that they’re offering fried plantains in the coming weeks.

According to Clover’s chef Rolando and co-founder Ayr, the menu will be changing with the seasons. “You can expect French fries made from just-cut PEI potatoes, fresh juices like you’ve never had before, perfect sandwiches, and we’ll be ladling out just-made soups in the winter, salads in the summer,” the say on their Web site.

The truck is in the heart of Dewey Square and there are several dining tables set up and strategically placed benches in this formerly depressed part of town. It’s a great spot to take in the sights and sounds of the park’s newly planted vegetation and retreat from the Financial District’s normally frantic vibe.

HelloMetro Tip:  Clover Food Lab relies heavily on social media to update its patrons on the comings and goings of the Dewey Square food truck. If they close early, they’ll post it on line and if the food truck is unveiling a new special, crews will announce it on their Twitter feed at twitter.com/cloverdwy. For the record, the menus at their MIT and DWY locations often differ.
