Bella Luna Restaurant: Dine under the stars in Jamaica Plain

Jun 27, 2010

Hyde Square’s loss is Jamaica Plain’s Brookside neighborhood’s gain. The recently moved Bella Luna Restaurant, part of the Milky Way entertainment complex formerly on Centre Street, set up shop at its new Amory Street digs near the Stony Brook T stop in May 2009.

According to co-owner Carol Downs, the Brewery Complex restaurant has evolved to reflect the tone of their groovy new space. It’s a celestial-inspired aesthetic punctuated with dark red walls and exposed brick coupled with their signature star-shaped lanterns dangling over booths and hand-painted plates.

“With a brand new kitchen and a bigger dining room, we’ve been able to focus more on the dining side of the business,” Downs tells HelloBoston. “Our food sales have increased dramatically, and we just hired a new Executive Chef Justin Hackett, and with his leadership we are going to be changing our menu four times a year to keep it exciting and seasonal.”

Last week, Hackett unveiled Bella Luna’s summer menu, chockfull of lighter food items like their chilled shrimp and avocado salad and a daily vegan entrée special which includes the Mediterranean Duet made with homemade hummus and spicy eggplant.

Downs says they are trying to raise the bar in regards to the quality of the food. “We’re creating more interesting specials and we offer a greater variety of homemade desserts than we could before,” she says. “In general, I think the quality of our food has risen a lot.  We have a beautiful spacious outdoor patio that is also extremely popular.”

Beginning in early June, Bella Luna opened on Fridays at 1 p.m. for lunch and have recently expanded their Saturday brunch menu. “We’ve been offering more traditional brunch on Saturdays, but starting this weekend we’re expanding our lunch menu and offering a few breakfast-type items for neighborhood folks looking to relax on Saturday mornings, like our Jupiter Breakfast Burrito and our Amory Street Breakfast Pizza.”

Before enjoying brunch at Bella Luna’s outdoor dining area, locals and out-of-towners make the trek to tour the Sam Adams brewery, located at 30 Germania St., where beer enthusiasts learn about the history of Samuel Adams, get the lowdown on the brewing process and, of course, sample some of their frothy bliss from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays.

HelloMetro Tip: If you’re coming on a Friday or Saturday night, make a reservation in advance at opentable.com so you don’t have to wait for a table. Bella Luna is packed on the weekends. Come early if you want to eat on the patio. It’s first come, first serve.
