Nov 10, 2009

ZooLights, a favorite Boston area holiday family tradition, returns to Stone Zoo on Thanksgiving Day 2009 through Dec. 30.

This bright winter wonderland draws tens of thousands of visitors annually by inspiring them as they walk along tree-lined paths lit by thousands of twinkling lights. Upon entering the zoo, guests will visit Yukon Creek, featuring not only glittering holiday lights but also bald eagles, porcupine, lynx, a gray fox – and reindeer to boot.

Children should plan to visit with Santa, who awaits their appearance in his Castle. Old Saint Nicholas will be available for photos through Dec. 23. After visiting Santa’s Castle, guests will enter a magical holiday world replete with fairy tale characters and plush dancing animals. The Santa photos and carousel rides are available for an additional fee.

For those planning to visit between Nov. 26-30, you'll receive $1 off the $5 per-person normal admission.

Stone Zoo, formerly known as the Middlesex Fells Zoo, is located on a 26-acre site near the sparkling Spot Pond reservoir in Stoneham, MA, just 15 minutes north of downtown Boston. Charles Price, Superintendent of the Metropolitan District Commission’s Middlesex Fells Reservation, founded the Zoo in 1905, and in 1969, the site was renamed in honor of Walter D. Stone, a former Zoo Director. In 1991, the Commonwealth Zoological Corporation (CZC) was created to maintain care, custody, and control of both Stone Zoo and Franklin Park Zoo. In July of 1997 the CZC changed its name to Zoo New England to reflect the changing image of the Zoos.

Stone Zoo is located at 149 Pond Street in Stoneham. For more information or directions, call 781-438-5100 or visit the Stone Zoo web site.

Commonwealth Zoological Corporation, which does business as  Zoo New England, is the private, non-profit corporation that operates Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and Stone Zoo in Stoneham. Its mission is to be a pre-eminent conservator of endangered animal species, and to provide world-class resources for conservation education.
